{"id":112,"date":"2008-01-25T08:15:32","date_gmt":"2008-01-24T20:15:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dfmamea.com\/blog\/2008\/01\/25\/meeting-other-writers\/"},"modified":"2012-09-23T15:44:28","modified_gmt":"2012-09-23T03:44:28","slug":"meeting-other-writers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dfmamea.com\/blog\/meeting-other-writers\/","title":{"rendered":"Meeting Other Writers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When you spend lengthy periods of time in a cave, wrestling mightily &#8211; nay, <b>epically<\/b> (?) &#8211; with your <strike>caffeine addiction<\/strike> current project, the idea of temporarily abandoning your lair to meet another screenwriter can seem a daunting prospect.  Who wants to spend a potentially awkward half-hour with someone you may only have swapped emails or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nzwg.org.nz\/forum\/\" target=\"_blank\">forum<\/a>-posts with?<\/p>\n<p>Yes, that&#8217;s a risk.  But a big reward for meeting other writers is the reminder that You&#8217;re Not Alone.  You both know the agony of creativity.  You&#8217;ve been through the horror of development.  And if you&#8217;ve been rewritten and can &#8211; after some mourning or therapy &#8211; talk about it, you&#8217;ll find a camaraderie not often seen outside the armed forces.<\/p>\n<p>One other thing you share &#8211; though you may not acknowledge it at first &#8211; is how your prior experience of meeting writers at parties and funerals and such has fashioned your approach to such encounters.  My own meet-and-greets have fallen into two very general categories:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>those who do; and,<\/li>\n<li>those who don&#8217;t.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><u>Those Who Don&#8217;t<\/u><\/p>\n<p>A contact with this type of writer requires a lot of patience and concentration.  And tact.<\/p>\n<div class=\"scrippet\">\n<p class=\"character\">ENTHUSIASTIC WRITER<\/p>\n<p class=\"dialogue\">&#8211; and then Ben &#8211; the hero, I mean protagonist &#8211; he opens the door to the other dimension, with his Broomstick of Power in one hand &#8211;<\/p>\n<p class=\"character\">ME<\/p>\n<p class=\"dialogue\">So he decides to <u>do<\/u> something about his life?<\/p>\n<p class=\"character\">ENTHUSIASTIC WRITER<\/p>\n<p class=\"dialogue\">What?  Yes.  Anyway, Ben, he&#8217;s got his broomstick and he&#8217;s going to look for Charlene &#8211;<\/p>\n<p class=\"character\">ME<\/p>\n<p class=\"dialogue\">Charlene?<\/p>\n<p class=\"character\">ENTHUSIASTIC WRITER<\/p>\n<p class=\"dialogue\">The woman he met at the party! The one who kissed him, like, totally unexpectedly &#8211;<\/p>\n<p class=\"character\">ME<\/p>\n<p class=\"dialogue\">Charlene who represents a goal &#8211; that there is more to Ben&#8217;s life than beer and parties?<\/p>\n<p class=\"character\">ENTHUSIASTIC WRITER<\/p>\n<p class=\"parenthetical\">(&#8216;whatevs&#8217;)<\/p>\n<p class=\"dialogue\">Yeah.  He&#8217;s got a hard-on for her and so he steps through the other-dimension door-portal&#46;&#46;&#46;<\/p>\n<p class=\"parenthetical\">(etc)<\/p>\n<p class=\"action\">SOME TIME LATER&#46;&#46;&#46;<\/p>\n<p class=\"character\">ME<\/p>\n<p class=\"dialogue\">That&#8217;s&#46;&#46;&#46; quite a story.  What draft are you at?<\/p>\n<p class=\"character\">ENTHUSIASTIC WRITER<\/p>\n<p class=\"dialogue\">Oh, I haven&#8217;t <u>written<\/u> it!<\/p>\n<p class=\"parenthetical\">(taps their temple)<\/p>\n<p class=\"dialogue\">It&#8217;s all in here.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>I applaud the enthusiasm &#8211; I really do.<\/p>\n<p><u>Those Who Do<\/u><\/br><\/p>\n<p>These encounters are just as demanding but much more stimulating.<\/p>\n<div class=\"scrippet\">\n<p class=\"character\">ME<\/p>\n<p class=\"dialogue\">So.  Whatcha working on?<\/p>\n<p class=\"character\">WRITER<\/p>\n<p class=\"dialogue\">A little bit of this, bit of that &#8211; know what I mean?<\/p>\n<p class=\"character\">ME<\/p>\n<p class=\"parenthetical\">(not really)<\/p>\n<p class=\"dialogue\">&#8216;Course, &#8216;f course.<\/p>\n<p class=\"character\">WRITER<\/p>\n<p class=\"dialogue\">What are <u>you<\/u> working on?<\/p>\n<p class=\"character\">ME<\/p>\n<p class=\"dialogue\">Ohhh&#46;&#46;&#46; nothing much.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>And so this crab-like dance continues as antennae probe gently, not forgetting anything, each word and\/or pause wrung of every possible, potential subtext.<\/p>\n<p>Once the conversation moves onto more neutral ground of influences, styles and the nuts &#8216;n&#8217; bolts, it becomes heaps of fun (&#8220;Who would win in a knock-down, drag-out fight between <i>Buffy<\/i> and that <i>Heroes<\/i> cheerleader chi- no, wait:  <i>the stripper mom<\/i>?&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p>Meeting a fellow writer is an opportunity to <i>share<\/i> about the craft, the industry, and general gossip.  We can&#8217;t just write in our caves, sending out for BK, Mac&#8217;s Gold, and chocolate, churning out The Word until it&#8217;s soiled by producers, directors, actors and editors alike.  We&#8217;re all in this together.<\/p>\n<p>So go out there.  Hug a writer.<\/p>\n<p><i>(We&#8217;re in me oul&#8217; home-toon a&#8217; Wellington visiting my side of the family.
