{"id":212,"date":"2008-10-04T18:16:46","date_gmt":"2008-10-04T06:16:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dfmamea.com\/blog\/?p=212"},"modified":"2012-10-19T12:31:25","modified_gmt":"2012-10-18T23:31:25","slug":"mild-vs-mild","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dfmamea.com\/blog\/mild-vs-mild\/","title":{"rendered":"Mild vs Mild"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A while back, <a href=\"http:\/\/unkreative.com\/musings\" target=\"_blank\">Amit<\/a> made the mistake of <a href=\"http:\/\/unkreative.com\/musings\/2008\/06\/time.html\" target=\"_blank\">posting one of his mouth-watering recipes<\/a> and, after a sustained campaign of a little arm-twisting and a lot of cajoling, he kindly allowed himself to not only travel all the way across town to have lunch with our family, but <strong>make it for us<\/strong>, too.<\/p>\n<p>(Hell, if you&#8217;re gonna post <a href=\"http:\/\/unkreative.com\/musings\/2006\/04\/asian-delight.html\" target=\"_blank\">your<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/unkreative.com\/musings\/2007\/03\/crumbled-kebabs-and-other-stories.html\" target=\"_blank\">fave<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/unkreative.com\/musings\/2008\/06\/time.html\" target=\"_blank\">recipes<\/a>, some prey-driven reader&#8217;s gonna catch you up, <em>bud<\/em>. Anyway.)<\/p>\n<p>He arrives with lunch, we <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">half-<\/span>joke that he can go now, we get stuck in to lunch with noises of anticipation&#8230; then appreciation &#8211; it&#8217;s a damned fine meal we tell Amit, pooh-poohing his modest protestations. And then &#8212;<\/p>\n<p>&#8212; The Girl excuses herself to get a glass of milk &#8212;<\/p>\n<p>&#8212; The Goddess excuses Herself to blow Her nose &#8212;<\/p>\n<p>&#8212; The Boy grovelled to his sister for a glass of milk for him, too, puh-lease &#8212;<\/p>\n<p>&#8212; and, unable to control my sinuses any more, I whipped out my hanky and blew as discreetly as I could.<\/p>\n<p><em>A bit hot, is it?<\/em> our guest chef ventures with a straight face.<\/p>\n<p>The thing was, in consideration of our non-Indian palates, he&#8217;d made the meal &#8216;mild&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>We thought we knew &#8216;mild&#8217;. We have monthly family outings to Asian and Indian restaurants where we order and enjoy meals that ranged from &#8216;medium&#8217; to &#8216;hot&#8217;. How spicy could our very considerate Indian-born guest&#8217;s cooking be?<\/p>\n<p>We learned a few things that day:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>one person&#8217;s mild is another&#8217;s medium-hot;<\/li>\n<li>Amit has <em>so<\/em> made himself this family&#8217;s curry king;<\/li>\n<li>and the local ethnic restaurants have been taking our palates for a ride.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Buried somewhere in this post is a moral about knowing your audience. Or the juggling of <em>thinking<\/em> you know your audience when your audience has <em>their own<\/em> idea of what you&#8217;re presenting them with.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to The Goddess, the moral is: <em>pushing<\/em> your audience means you&#8217;re <em>engaging<\/em> with them. Engage with them and they&#8217;ll look forward to your next presentation.<\/p>\n<p>(And Amit lives a whole lot <a href=\"http:\/\/unkreative.com\/musings\/2008\/09\/grace-is-gone.html\" target=\"_blank\">closer<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/unkreative.com\/musings\/2008\/09\/move.html\" target=\"_blank\">now<\/a>.
