They just <i>were<\/i>, know-what-I-mean? Didn&#8217;t serial killers just <i>happen<\/i> to be called Gacy and Bundy? Didn&#8217;t Stallone and Schwarzenegger <i>become<\/i> action film brands? So what if my sister and I were named after our neighbours? (And why do people find this amusing?)<\/p>\n<p>Names are important, though:<\/p>\n<div style=\"margin-left: 25px; margin-right: 25px;\">A name is like a tightly-wound DNA molecule, capable of conveying information about characterisation, tone, story and theme.<br \/>\n&#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wordplayer.com\/columns\/wp09.Name-dropping.html\" target=\"_blank\">Elliott &amp; Rossio<\/a><\/div>\n<p>I&#8217;ve long since run out of first and middle names of <a href=\"http:\/\/dfmamea.com\/blog\/2006\/12\/04\/purely-coincidental-similarities\/\">friends<\/a>, family and acquaintances. Unlike <a href=\"http:\/\/johnaugust.com\/archives\/2003\/choosing-character-names\" target=\"_blank\">John August<\/a>, no streetnames I can remember or think of lend themselves to being affixed to my <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">puppets<\/span> characters.<\/p>\n<p>I have to work at it. But maybe I learnt from the best:<\/p>\n<div class=\"scrippet\">\n<p class=\"sceneheader\">INT. LOUNGE, MY PARENTS&#8217; HOUSE &#8211; EVENING &#8211; SOME TIME AGO<\/p>\n<p class=\"action\">My MOTHER cradles her week-old grandson, DAVID (not his real name), and makes coo-ing noises. My FATHER peers at the packet of swaddling and wrinkles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"character\">FATHER<\/p>\n<p class=\"dialogue\">What&#8217;s his name?<\/p>\n<p class=\"character\">ME<\/p>\n<p class=\"parenthetical\">(proudly)<\/p>\n<p class=\"dialogue\">David.<\/p>\n<p class=\"action\">My mother wrinkles her nose.<\/p>\n<p class=\"character\">MOTHER<\/p>\n<p class=\"dialogue\">What sort of name is David?<\/p>\n<p class=\"character\">ME<\/p>\n<p class=\"dialogue\">&#8216;S a great name &#8211; direct and unambiguous.<\/p>\n<p class=\"action\">My father nods slowly and, after a beat, clears his throat:<\/p>\n<p class=\"character\">FATHER<\/p>\n<p class=\"parenthetical\">(to child)<\/p>\n<p class=\"dialogue\">We will call you&#46;&#46;&#46; Safune.<\/p>\n<p class=\"character\">DAVID\/SAFUNE<\/p>\n<p class=\"dialogue\">Gurgle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"character\">MOTHER<\/p>\n<p class=\"parenthetical\">(to Father)<\/p>\n<p class=\"dialogue\">He likes that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"character\">ME<\/p>\n<p class=\"parenthetical\">(getting a little cross)<\/p>\n<p class=\"dialogue\">What&#8217;s wrong with David?<\/p>\n<p class=\"action\">Safune and his grandparents ignore the recently-minted father and leave the room.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the beginning, I didn&#8217;t care much for my character&#8217;s names.
