I’ll watch anything by Steven Soderbergh<\/strong> – and if it’s a genre piece, I’m quite likely to add it my library.\u00a0 Copies of Traffic<\/em>,\u00a0The Limey<\/em>,\u00a0Solaris<\/em>, Out of Sight<\/em>, and\u00a0Ocean’s Eleven<\/em> have pride of place on the shelves. \u00a0(The absence of\u00a0Erin Brockovich\u00a0<\/em>and the\u00a0Ocean\u00a0<\/em>sequels is,\u00a0I think, self-explanatory.)<\/p>\n

When I heard Soderbergh was making an action film<\/em>, my Pavlovian response was predictable.\u00a0 An awesome roll call of actors.\u00a0 The writer of The Limey<\/em>.\u00a0 Exotic locales.\u00a0 Its arrival on these shores couldn’t happen quickly enough.<\/p>\n

It skipped a theatrical release and went straight to DVD.\u00a0 I watched it and kinda liked it.\u00a0 I watched it again – this time with The Goddess<\/strong> – and liked it more.\u00a0 And I think I’ll watch it again.<\/p>\n

This excellent Editing Room<\/a>\u00a0abridged script both captures and highlights what I really enjoy about\u00a0Haywire<\/em>: \u00a0it upsets my expectations of an action thriller while still giving me an action thriller.\u00a0 It’s no masterpiece.\u00a0 It’s a genre exercise.\u00a0 The story is familiar as all get out.\u00a0 Lead Gina Carano<\/strong>‘s game acting is surrounded by an excellent supporting cast who get into the spirit of things rather than just slumming it.\u00a0 Soderbergh’s crisp direction and Dobbs’ deft script provide 93 minutes of action, thrills and suspense.<\/p>\n
