{"id":287,"date":"2009-02-01T15:00:45","date_gmt":"2009-02-01T03:00:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dfmamea.com\/blog\/?p=287"},"modified":"2014-03-31T19:40:29","modified_gmt":"2014-03-31T06:40:29","slug":"lists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dfmamea.com\/blog\/lists\/","title":{"rendered":"Lists"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;re a two-car family:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Goddess drives Her chariot, aka <i>The Little Car<\/i>;<\/li>\n<li>and I drive the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dfmamea.com\/PDFs\/070309%20%20The%20Camry%20Sportswagon.pdf\">sportswagon<\/a>, aka <i>The Big Car<\/i>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The sportswagon is Japanese, inconspicuous and boringly reliable.<\/p>\n<p>The chariot is Italian, spunky and an attention-seeker &#8211; the attention being of the garage mechanic kind.  But The Goddess loves it to <i>bits<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Just before we headed south last weekend*, the wee car was lustily belting along when all power disappeared &#8211; just like <i>that<\/i> &#8211; and, after some checking and poking under the hood, and reading of the user manual, the sportswagon and I towed it to the local garage.<\/p>\n<p>A few days later, mid-holiday, I came upon a scrap of paper with The Goddess&#8217;s handwriting:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>hatchback<\/li>\n<li>1200-1500cc engine<\/li>\n<li>manual transmission<\/li>\n<li>a Honda Jazz?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>(Below Her writing was a scrawl by different, mortal, hands: <i>ejection seats, STOL capability, NOS on-demand, coffee machine, HUD with satnav, cloaking device<\/i>.)<\/p>\n<p>Like I said, The Goddess loves Her chariot.  But I suppose there&#8217;s a limit to how much one is willing to contribute to your mechanic&#8217;s passion for deep-sea fishing.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nI have a similar list for my <a href=\"http:\/\/dfmamea.com\/blog\/2008\/09\/15\/the-working-first-draft\/\">current project<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp; 1.&nbsp; <strike>treatment<\/strike><br \/>\n&nbsp; 2.&nbsp; <strike>scene breakdown<\/strike><br \/>\n&nbsp; 3.&nbsp; <strike>working first draft<\/strike><br \/>\n&nbsp; 4.&nbsp; first draft<br \/>\n&nbsp; 5.&nbsp; inflict on readers<br \/>\n&nbsp; 6.&nbsp; second draft<br \/>\n&nbsp; 7.&nbsp; inflict on surviving readers<br \/>\n&nbsp; 8.&nbsp; third draft<br \/>\n&nbsp; (and so on)<\/p>\n<p>The thing is, the first draft was <a href=\"http:\/\/dfmamea.com\/blog\/2009\/01\/12\/multiple-meanings\/\">aborted<\/a> after eighty-plus pages and although I&#8217;ve returned to a prose treatment&#8230; I&#8217;ve started another list:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp; a.&nbsp; it&#8217;s a story about fathers and sons<br \/>\n&nbsp; b.&nbsp; the father was a towering personality<br \/>\n&nbsp; c.&nbsp; the son has a chip on his shoulder (ie., his father)<br \/>\n&nbsp; c.&nbsp; it&#8217;s a tale of love lost&#8230; and regained<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; while in a less tidy hand &#8211; still my own &#8211; and in no discernible order:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp; &#8211;&nbsp; throw in a car chase<br \/>\n&nbsp; &#8211;&nbsp; <strike>and a gratuitous sex scene<\/strike><br \/>\n&nbsp; &#8211;&nbsp; have them sort it out over hot lead<br \/>\n&nbsp; &#8211;&nbsp; as long as they all hold hands in the end<br \/>\n&nbsp; &#8211;&nbsp; <strike>gratuitous sex<\/strike> tasteful love scene<\/p>\n<p>Mm.  Getting there.<\/p>\n<p>(This&#8217;ll be the last post about the process (and That Project) for a while &#8211; the potty-mouthed <a href=\"http:\/\/phillbarron.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Phill Barron<\/a> and the mysterious <a href=\"http:\/\/thedailyscreenwriter.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Daily Screenwriter<\/a> write about process much more interestingly than I do.)<\/p>\n<p>\n<small>*&nbsp; Sorry for the week&#8217;s silence.
