{"id":4055,"date":"2014-06-16T00:00:05","date_gmt":"2014-06-15T12:00:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dfmamea.com\/?p=4055"},"modified":"2014-07-31T06:28:10","modified_gmt":"2014-07-30T18:28:10","slug":"yowch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dfmamea.com\/blog\/yowch\/","title":{"rendered":"Yowch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The other day, I was out and about in the <a href=\"http:\/\/dfmamea.com\/2009\/02\/01\/lists\/\" target=\"_blank\">Goddess&#8217; chariot<\/a>, far from the fortress, when I entered a roundabout and saw a blue car approaching from my left \u2014<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 I noticed it wasn&#8217;t slowing down \u2014 matter of fact, it was already right \u2014 <i>riiiiight<\/i> \u2014 in front of me and I thought, \u201cYou&#8217;ve got to be kidding, dude&#8221; when \u2014<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 my seatbelt tightened as we collided and the Fiat&#8217;s bonnet crumpled alarmingly towards me and I thought, \u201cThe Goddess is not going to like that\u201d \u2014<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 my point-of-view skewed rightwards as the cars separated, the other car spinning off the road while the Fiat came to a complete stop, at a right angle to its original direction only moments earlier \u2014<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 and I thought, \u201cUn-fucking-believable,\u201d angry that I was involved in an accident, and in the Goddess&#8217; chariot to boot.<\/p>\n<p>I got out and ran to the other car which was already swarming with concerned motorists. The other driver was alive and moving \u2014 \u201cI&#8217;m so sorry,\u201d he said \u2014 and my anger disappeared. The road seemed crowded with pedestrians \u2014 every second or third one asking if I&#8217;m okay \u2014 and when I returned to the Fiat to try and get it off the road \u2014 a guy with calm efficiency told me he had it under control and why don&#8217;t I go and sit down on the verge over there.<\/p>\n<p>I sat down on the grass as a half-dozen people pushed the chariot to the side of the road, others directing traffic, strangers brought together in that moment to help out, clean up, and keep things moving and safe. I was alive. So was the other driver. Things could have been so much worse but we both walked away from our vehicles that day.<\/p>\n<p>Yes: unfortunately, the <a href=\"http:\/\/dfmamea.com\/2009\/02\/01\/lists\/\" target=\"_blank\">Italian stallion<\/a> is no more:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dfmamea.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Photo0709.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dfmamea.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Photo0709-300x225.jpg?resize=300%2C225\" alt=\"Italian Stallion 2005\u20132014\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-4056\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I look at the picture and I&#8217;m grateful for engineers and crumple zones. Grateful to the motorists who stopped and helped that afternoon, foremost <b>Phil<\/b> who took charge. Grateful to <b>Woody<\/b> the police sergeant who attended the scene.
