I know. I know.<\/i>\u00a0You and I know what kicked this venture off, don’t we?<\/p>\n

How hard could it be to write about four friends driving from Auckland to Wellington in a Kingswood stationwagon?<\/i><\/p>\n

I\u00a0have\u00a0friends. We’ve had some adventures. We’ve fallen out and reunited. Some friends I’ve known for more than half of my life. No matter the physical distance or the\u00a0years\u00a0between catch-ups, I love them because they’re virtually\u00a0family\u00a0\u2014\u00a0the\u00a0difference between them and blood relatives is that we chose each other<\/i>.<\/p>\n

So how frickin’ hard could it be to write about a bunch of friends travelling long distance in a classic car?<\/p>\n

Harder than I expected.\u00a0I first wrote it in a skeletal beatsheet form, rewrote it with some bits of dialogue and action in it, took it apart, reassembled it, rewrote it with more dialogue and action,\u00a0pimped it this time last year<\/a>, rewrote it, disassembled\/reassembled\/rewrote it, threw my hands up in exasperation, sulked, got over myself, rewrote it to a full and complete draft, then, despite vowing never to revisit it, revised that\u00a0draft and\u2026the first proper draft is finished. It’s currently with readers for their\u00a0consideration.<\/p>\n

What took so long?<\/em> I hear you ask. This play took longer\u00a0because it has\u00a0much more of me in it than I bargained\u00a0for: writing about love and friendship and history and forgiveness required an honesty that no amount of imaginative tap dancing could hide. It was exhausting.<\/p>\n

I’m thoroughly sick of this play and hope to never see it again. But should\u00a0a rehearsed reading be\u00a0arranged and I get to\u00a0hear and see it interpreted by people\u00a0who have no agenda other than\u00a0Let’s pretend<\/em>,\u00a0don’t be surprised if\u00a0I think to myself,\u00a0How hard could it be to revisit \u2018Kingswood\u2019 just one more\u00a0time?<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
