{"id":4209,"date":"2015-04-01T22:33:28","date_gmt":"2015-04-01T09:33:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dfmamea.com\/?p=4209"},"modified":"2015-04-14T15:50:06","modified_gmt":"2015-04-14T03:50:06","slug":"kingswood-prelude","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dfmamea.com\/blog\/kingswood-prelude\/","title":{"rendered":"KINGSWOOD: Prelude"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last weekend, I nipped down to my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wellingtonnz.com\/discover\" target=\"_blank\">oul&#8217; hometoon<\/a> and ran into\u00a0this:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cubadupa.co.nz\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-4210\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dfmamea.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Photo1033-300x225.jpg?resize=525%2C698\" alt=\"Photo1033\" width=\"525\" height=\"698\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Cuba Street closed to traffic, its footpaths and road filthy with pedestrians, all of it sprinkled with light rain showers and a very family-friendly vibe: a street festival called <a href=\"http:\/\/cubadupa.co.nz\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cuba Dupa<\/a>. Nice. I walked past the crowded foodstalls with their mouthwatering aromas\u00a0and found\u00a0sanctuary in the cool and quiet\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.stuff.co.nz\/dominion-post\/capital-life\/cafe-scene\/9095244\/Cafe-review-Clarks-Wellington\" target=\"_blank\">Clark&#8217;s Cafe<\/a>\u00a0(where they still have cheesecake cup cakes,\u00a0very nice indeedy).<\/p>\n<p>Once fed, watered and rested,\u00a0\u00a0I hop-skip-and-jumped over the unimaginatively named City to Sea Bridge to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.circa.co.nz\" target=\"_blank\">Circa Theatre<\/a> where <i>Kingswood<\/i> won the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.playmarket.org.nz\/news\/adam-nz-play-award-winners-2015\" target=\"_blank\">2015 Adam Award for Best Play by a Pasifika Playwright<\/a>. I guess I&#8217;ll be <a href=\"http:\/\/dfmamea.com\/2015\/02\/28\/kingswood-one-year-on\/\" target=\"_blank\">revisiting that script<\/a> sooner than planned.<\/p>\n<p>While at the Adam Awards,\u00a0I rubbed shoulders with:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Hone Kouka<\/strong>, co-winner of the\u00a02015 Adam Award for Best New Zealand Play\u00a0for\u00a0<em>Bless the Child<\/em>, as well as winner of\u00a0<em>Best Play by a Maori Playwright<\/em>;<\/li>\n<li>runner-up\u00a0<strong>Dean Parker<\/strong> with\u00a0<em>Polo<\/em> (though I do prefer his initial title,\u00a0<em>Fear and Misery in the Third Term<\/em>);<\/li>\n<li><strong>Michelanne Forster<\/strong>, winner of\u00a0<em>Best Play by a Woman Playwright\u00a0<\/em>for\u00a0<em>The Gift of Tongues<\/em>;<\/li>\n<li>author of the\u00a0highly commended,\u00a0<em>Significance<\/em>,\u00a0<strong>Tom McCrory<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li>the always luminous <a href=\"http:\/\/www.playmarket.org.nz\/playwrights\/miria-george\" target=\"_blank\">Miria George<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>the boundlessly talented <a href=\"http:\/\/www.radionz.co.nz\/national\/programmes\/gosolo\/audio\/2514565\/i-love-you-toru,-wha-by-moana-ete\" target=\"_blank\">Moana Ete<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>Wellington man-about-town <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kractors.co.nz\/detailsx.php?act_id=20\" target=\"_blank\">Jonathon Hendry<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>the irrepressible <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kfieldingwrites.com\/ooh-thats-interesting-interview-with-k-c-kelly\/\" target=\"_blank\">KC Kelly<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.victoria.ac.nz\/seftms\/about\/staff\/david-odonnell\" target=\"_blank\">David O&#8217;Donnell<\/a>, fresh from directing Victor Rodger&#8217;s\u00a0incendiary <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatreview.org.nz\/reviews\/review.php?id=7693\" target=\"_blank\">My Name is Gary Cooper<\/a> in Hawaii;<\/li>\n<li>and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.playmarket.org.nz\" target=\"_blank\">Playmarket<\/a> gang of\u00a0<strong>Murray Lynch<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Stuart Hoar<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Salesi Leota<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Claire O&#8217;Loughlin<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That&#8217;s me: an utterly shameless name-dropper.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last weekend, I nipped down to my oul&#8217; hometoon and ran into\u00a0this: Cuba Street closed to traffic, its footpaths and road filthy with pedestrians, all of it sprinkled with light rain showers and a very family-friendly vibe: a street festival called Cuba Dupa.
