The original run of\u00a0The X-Files<\/a>\u00a0was not quite the appointment\u00a0viewing that\u00a0Law & Order<\/a>\u00a0was. When I did watch it, I thrilled to the case-of-the-week but quickly tired of the overall story arc\u00a0\u2014 especially once\u00a0I realised how that\u00a0was progressed:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. a witness reluctantly testifies\u00a0to Mulder with potentially earth-shattering information;<\/li>\n
  2. Mulder leaps to the conclusion that this witness is The Key to the mystery or conspiracy he is trying to unravel;<\/li>\n
  3. the witness disappears or dies;<\/li>\n
  4. the witness’s uncorroborated testimony has a sliver of information that leads to another witness;<\/li>\n
  5. repeat from 1. above.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The above\u00a0recipe\u00a0worked a treat\u00a0for the show but my viewing began to slip as I tried with less and less success to block out the conspiracy blah-blah and enjoy the case-of-the-week. The last I saw of The X-Files<\/em>\u00a0was the feature film\u00a0Fight the Future<\/a>\u00a0which\u00a0was\u00a0two hours <\/em>of\u00a0conspiracy gibberish, made slightly\u00a0passable\u00a0by the gravitas of\u00a0Martin Landau<\/strong> and\u00a0Armin Mueller-Stahl <\/strong>and feature-budget SFX.<\/p>\n

    So\u2026\u00a0Mulder and Scully are together again, and the truth is still out there. As an audience member, I’m like,\u00a0Yeah, nah<\/em>. As a writer, it’s disappointing to see it hasn’t refreshed its find-witness-leap-to-conclusion-lose-witness recipe \u2014 I mean, after nine goddamned seasons and two feature films, don’tchathink the heroes would’ve learned to protect their witnesses better by now? And, shockingly, it suffers from say-my-name-ism\u00a0\u2014 following is an exchange verbatim:<\/p>\n

    EXT. PUBLIC MEETING PLACE -- DAY<\/p>\n

    FOX MULDER\u00a0exits a car and joins DANA SCULLY on a busy city street. It’s been years since they last saw each other.<\/p>\n

    SCULLY<\/p>\n

    (off Mulder’s mode of transport)<\/p>\n

    Uber?<\/p>\n

    MULDER<\/p>\n

    I hitchhiked.<\/p>\n

    (off Scully)<\/p>\n

    Relax, Scully, I’m kidding.<\/p>\n

    SCULLY<\/p>\n

    I just worry about you, Mulder.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
