{"id":4610,"date":"2016-08-14T21:38:00","date_gmt":"2016-08-14T09:38:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dfmamea.com\/?p=4610"},"modified":"2016-08-14T21:38:14","modified_gmt":"2016-08-14T09:38:14","slug":"endings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dfmamea.com\/blog\/endings\/","title":{"rendered":"Endings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/en\/thumb\/0\/07\/The_Night_Manager_titlecard.jpg\/250px-The_Night_Manager_titlecard.jpg\" width=\"325\" height=\"183\" \/> <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Last_Panthers\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/en\/thumb\/e\/e8\/The_last_panthers-keyart.jpg\/250px-The_last_panthers-keyart.jpg\" width=\"243\" height=\"183\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Two six-ep mini-series were consumed recently:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Night_Manager_(miniseries)\" target=\"_blank\">The Night Manager<\/a>, a BBC-AMC co-production based on the <strong>John Le Carre<\/strong> novel, directed by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm81540\/\" target=\"_blank\">Susanne Bier<\/a> and stars <strong>Tom Hiddleston<\/strong>, <strong>Hugh Laurie<\/strong> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm1469236\/\" target=\"_blank\">Olivia Colman<\/a> (who, to be honest, was the main reason why I started watching this); and<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Last_Panthers\" target=\"_blank\">The Last Panthers<\/a>, an original Sky (UK)-Canal+ co-pro created by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jack_Thorne_(writer)\" target=\"_blank\">Jack Thorne<\/a>, and stars <strong>Samantha Morton<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tahar_Rahim\" target=\"_blank\">Tahar Rahim<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Goran_Bogdan\" target=\"_blank\">Goran Bogdan<\/a>, and <strong>John Hurt<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Both have excellent casts, are slickly directed and written, jet set around the Continent, and are absorbing thrillers with compelling and flawed characters.<\/p>\n<p>So why have I forgotten most of one while still mulling over the contents of the other?<\/p>\n<p>It was the endings that sorted these two out \u2014 I was fully invested in each of them through the first five eps. In one show, the final ep was a stomach churner of suspense that followed the main players to inescapable and sometimes bitter resolutions. In the other, what began as a tense finale went limp partway through as it copped out with an ending where good triumphs over evil.<\/p>\n<p>Who am I to say that it copped out? Well\u2026 what was I supposed to expect after five eps of betrayals and reversals and sacrifices? It certainly wasn&#8217;t what I got, I can tell you.<\/p>\n<p>And what the heck do I know about inescapable and sometimes bitter resolutions? We&#8217;re all <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.nz\/search?q=doing+life+together&amp;client=firefox-b-ab&amp;biw=1233&amp;bih=676&amp;tbm=isch&amp;imgil=ZGZyAYmK1JZKeM%253A%253Bw-04KzoU084THM%253Bhttp%25253A%25252F%25252Fchristchurchwgc.org.uk%25252Fbanners%25252Fdoing-life-together%25252F&amp;source=iu&amp;pf=m&amp;fir=ZGZyAYmK1JZKeM%253A%252Cw-04KzoU084THM%252C_&amp;usg=__fUmG5nsXzxaO5o05rRWUIQuS4ko%3D&amp;ved=0ahUKEwihhK3nxcDOAhVJEpQKHb2fAnwQyjcIJQ&amp;ei=cDOwV6GMLsmk0AS9v4rgBw#imgrc=ZGZyAYmK1JZKeM%3A\" target=\"_blank\">doing life<\/a>, aren&#8217;t we?
