OS X disk permissions (a pathetic stretch, but hey).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Sometimes I’ll get to an early stage of developing a project and I’ll stop.<\/p>\n

It’s not writer’s block, or a\u00a0gap in character, story and\/or background knowledge. You likely already know that at Fortress Mamea, writer’s block is never an issue<\/a>, the characters write themselves<\/a>, story is always a\u00a0cakewalk<\/a>, and I never let ignorance and incuriosity get in the way of a first draft.<\/p>\n

I used to think it was a crisis of confidence \u2014\u00a0What the hell am I doing, thinking I can write?<\/em> \u2014 but\u00a0what it really is is a crisis of permission:\u00a0Who the hell gave me the permission to write about [SOMETHING POTENTIALLY FAINTLY\/REMOTELY CONTROVERSIAL]?<\/em><\/p>\n

With\u00a0Kingswood<\/a>, a love play to my friends and our misspent youth, the question of permissions were sidestepped\u00a0by accident: the acts of\u00a0writing and development (and rushing to meet deadlines) meant that actual-event-inspired truths quickly gave way to\u00a0more dramatically efficient emotional truths. At this point in time, I would have no hesitation in\u00a0comping my friends to a production.<\/p>\n

As for\u00a0Still Life With Chickens<\/a>, basing it on my mother’s adventures with poultry gave rise to\u00a0concerns about my excavation\u00a0of Mamea family history. I don’t actually recall a crisis of permission. And when\u00a0I wrote the first dozen or so pages in a blur of creativity and read them back, I found I’d\u00a0repeated what I’d done with\u00a0Kingswood<\/em>\u00a0at some subconscious level: dramatic emotional truth trumped the source material.<\/p>\n

Those are\u00a0terrible examples, aren’t they?\u00a0I was rescued by circumstance and dumb\u00a0(creative) luck, respectively.<\/p>\n

So.\u00a0There’s\u00a0another<\/em>\u00a0project\u00a0I’ve added to my development slate: it’s an all-female four-hander period piece.<\/p>\n

Who the hell do I think I am to write\u00a0four female characters<\/strong>?<\/em><\/p>\n

I don’t know but I’m not going to let that stop me.<\/p>\n
