(Photo: David White. www.noted.co.nz)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I&#8217;ve come some way since my unforgivable <a href=\"http:\/\/dfmamea.com\/blog\/2006\/10\/30\/dean-parker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">near total ignorance<\/a> of Dean\u00a0Parker&#8217;s oeuvre. I&#8217;ve tried to make up for it ever since. (And just as well as I&#8217;ve had the pleasure and honour of meeting him\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dfmamea.com\/blog\/2013\/08\/12\/meet-and-greet\/\">on<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dfmamea.com\/blog\/2015\/04\/01\/kingswood-prelude\/\">occasion<\/a>.) I&#8217;m not afraid to say it: I&#8217;m a fan.<\/p>\n<p>I found this excellent quote at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.noted.co.nz\/culture\/theatre\/one-minute-with-playwright-dean-parker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Listener<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>What advice might you give aspiring playwrights and screenwriters?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One day you\u2019ll declare that there must be no changes to your script, and then\u00a0the producer will take you out to lunch. Midway\u00a0through the lunch he\u2019ll say, \u201cI\u2019ve\u00a0brought you here to show you something\u201d, and reach under the table. He\u2019ll\u00a0then hold up a phantom monster.\u00a0\u201cCan you see the monster?\u201d he\u2019ll\u00a0ask. Wanting to humour him, you\u2019ll say,\u00a0\u201cUmmm \u2026 yes.\u201d He\u2019ll say, \u201cDo you know the name of the monster?\u201d Defeated, you\u2019ll bleat, \u201cUmmm \u2026 no\u201d, and he\u2019ll say, \u201cThe name of the monster is \u2013 IT\u2019S OUR MONEY.\u201d Be prepared for this.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Ah yes: commerce versus art.<\/p>\n<p>Once upon a time, my response would&#8217;ve been that that it&#8217;s still\u00a0<strong>your story<\/strong>. Until they pay you out and replace you, you&#8217;re still\u00a0<b>the goddamned writer<\/b>. And if you&#8217;d learned anything at all from my\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dfmamea.com\/blog\/2008\/03\/25\/break-rip\/\">adventures<\/a>, you&#8217;ll already have representation \u2014 the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nzwg.org.nz\">guild<\/a>, an agent or a manager \u2014 who&#8217;re only a speed dial away.<\/p>\n<p>Nowadays it can be\u2026 complicated. But not insurmountable.
