There is <em>always<\/em> a deadline to meet. Everything else depends. My general approach is as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>write at full speed in a glorious blaze of early enthusiasm;<\/li>\n<li>run out of enthusiasm and squeeze out little gobbets of this and that;<\/li>\n<li>hit a writing block and, in an attempt to be inspired, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aspyre.com\" target=\"_blank\">shoot anything that moves<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>panic when iCal reminds me of looming deadline;<\/li>\n<li>freak out wife and kids by working seventy-two-hours straight to deliver to deadline.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Hahaha, just kidding. (See also <a href=\"http:\/\/jerslater.blogspot.com\/2006\/09\/on-writers-life.html\" target=\"_blank\">this writing process<\/a>.)
