The ever effervescent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/nickftward\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nick Ward<\/a> MCed the event while I did my best <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vanna_White\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vanna White<\/a> impression handing him the awards as required. It was a great turn out \u2014 my evening ensemble was admired (21st century <em>Miami Vice<\/em>, courtesy of various op shops), the food was good and plentiful, and it&#8217;s always nice to see so many writerly faces in one place.<\/p>\n<p>The symposium was a more formal affair \u2014 collegial rather than fraternal \u2014 and was rampant with speakers and attendees, some of them I knew from one thing or another, and some I met for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>Over the three days, I caught up with:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Alice<\/strong>, <strong>Mel<\/strong>, <strong>Alan<\/strong>, <strong>Allan<\/strong>, <strong>Kathryn<\/strong> and <strong>Rachel<\/strong> from the guild re<em>present<\/em>ed;<\/li>\n<li>three from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.victoria.ac.nz\/modernletters\/our-students\/ma-profiles\/ma-scriptwriting-profiles-2016\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">class of 2016<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 the unstoppable <strong>Maraea Rakuraku<\/strong>, the inquisitive <strong>William Duignan<\/strong>, and the observant\u00a0<strong>Myfanwy Fanning-Randall<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li>former guild ED <strong>Steve Gannaway<\/strong> and his partner <strong>Alex Cole-Baker<\/strong>; <em>One Thousand Ropes<\/em>&#8216;\u00a0<strong>Tusi Tamasese<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Catherine Fitzgerald<\/strong>;\u00a0PIFT stalwarts <strong>Aaron Taouma<\/strong>, <strong>Arnette Arapai<\/strong> and <strong>Sandra Kailahi<\/strong>;\u00a0South Pacific Pictures&#8217; <strong>Tim Balme <\/strong>and <strong>James Griffin<\/strong>; and\u00a0<em>Waru<\/em>&#8216;s <strong>Chelsea Cohen<\/strong>, <strong>Ainsley Gardiner<\/strong>, <strong>Paula Jones<\/strong>, <strong>Casey Kaa<\/strong>, <strong>Renae Maihi<\/strong>, <strong>Josephine Stewart-Te Whiu<\/strong> and <strong>Katie Wolfe<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Chantelle Burgoyne<\/strong>; South Seas&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Gerben Cath<\/strong>;\u00a0the indefatigable <strong>Tony Forster<\/strong>; <strong>Paula Jones<\/strong> (no, the other one);\u00a0<strong>Roseanne Liang<\/strong>;\u00a0<strong>Christina Milligan;\u00a0<\/strong>producing titan <strong>Robin Scholes<\/strong>; <em>Riverside Kings<\/em>&#8216;\u00a0<strong>Sarita So<\/strong>; and the redoubtable <strong>Louise Tu&#8217;u<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Speaker highlights of the symposium were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>an small-group Q-and-A with <strong>David Mich\u00f4d<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li>a refreshing and irreverent talk by <strong>Neil Cross<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li>filmmaker <strong>So Yong Kim<\/strong>&#8216;s oeuvre is a fascinating thing I need to look into;<\/li>\n<li>agent <strong>Bec Smith<\/strong>&#8216;s talk was a confirmation of how talent always finds a way;<\/li>\n<li>and Oz drama commissioners <strong>Kyle Du Fresne<\/strong> and <strong>Penny Win<\/strong>, was an interesting session on how things happen across the ditch.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A bit of a blur but I&#8217;m glad I attended.<\/p>\n<p>(I&#8217;ve done it again: even though I name-checked the <a href=\"http:\/\/dfmamea.com\/blog\/2017\/08\/31\/2017-screenwriting-research-network-conference\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Screenwriting Research Network Conference<\/a>\u00a0in August, I&#8217;ve neglected to write about this year&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/tourmakers.co.nz\/arts-market\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Arts Market<\/a>\u00a0in Auckland.
