{"id":5512,"date":"2019-12-11T16:30:29","date_gmt":"2019-12-11T03:30:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dfmamea.com\/blog\/?p=5512"},"modified":"2019-12-26T00:07:32","modified_gmt":"2019-12-25T11:07:32","slug":"what-i-did-this-year-part-three","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dfmamea.com\/blog\/what-i-did-this-year-part-three\/","title":{"rendered":"What I Did This Year \u2014 Part Three"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is the view of Wellington from the International\u00a0Institute\u00a0of Modern\u00a0Letters&#8217; work room:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dfmamea.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/The-View-from-the-IIML-Work-Room.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5505\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dfmamea.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/The-View-from-the-IIML-Work-Room.jpg?resize=525%2C394\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"394\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Contrary to <strong>The Lovely Wife<\/strong>&#8216;s opinion of Wellington weather, this was how the city looked most days I met with my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wgtn.ac.nz\/modernletters\/our-students\/ma-profiles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fellow scriptwriters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>What can I say about my year in that work room?<\/p>\n<p>We all worked hard to be in there.<\/p>\n<p>We continued to work hard. We shared work stories, war stories, and horror stories.\u00a0We all wanted to write. We wanted to be inspired by who and what we admired and aspired to be like.<\/p>\n<p>We wrote whatever the hell we wanted \u2014 prevailing and imminent zeitgeists be damned! \u2014 and Ken gave us the space and support with which to do so.<\/p>\n<p>We all went through the pain of <em>creating<\/em> \u2014 actual <a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wong-Baker_Faces_Pain_Rating_Scale\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wattage<\/a> varied with each writer \u2014 but the work room was a haven where we could confess and share and not feel alone for a two to three hours.<\/p>\n<p>This year was a treasure. I got what I wanted out of the course: a project I knew would be challenging \u2014 it almost got the better of me several times, I tell you \u2014 and, one month on, I&#8217;m just glad to see the back of it. I also got to know and admire and respect nine other writers, most of them half my age, all of them talented and motivated story-tellers, each with a recognisable voice \u2014 each I&#8217;m glad to know is out there writing.<\/p>\n<p>So.
