Such material may be grist for the soap opera mill, but in the hands of Mr McGovern, his collaborators and an ensemble cast that includes <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0001363\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jane Horrocks<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/imdb.com\/name\/nm0000980\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jim Broadbent<\/a> and the ever excellent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0001758\/\" target=\"_blank\">Timothy Spall<\/a>, we&#8217;re in meaty <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0005139\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mike Leigh<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/imdb.com\/name\/nm0516360\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ken Loach<\/a> territory. It took me a while to warm to it but The Goddess loved it because <em>it&#8217;s all about relationships<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Equally satisfying was <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Burn_Notice_(TV_series)\" target=\"_blank\">Burn Notice<\/a>, a spy\/P.I. series cut from the same cloth as Eighties classics <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stingray_(NBC_TV_series)\" target=\"_blank\">Stingray<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/MacGyver\" target=\"_blank\">MacGyver<\/a>, and lined with the cool absurdity of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0000057\/\" target=\"_blank\">David Niven<\/a>&#8216;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0061452\/\" target=\"_blank\">Casino Royale<\/a> and the sudden violence of <a href=\"http:\/\/imdb.com\/title\/tt0111503\/\" target=\"_blank\">True Lies<\/a>. It&#8217;s got a light touch that&#8217;s rare in American television, and enough home-made gadgets, action set-pieces and one-liners to have me grinning by hour&#8217;s end.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>(Am looking forward to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pushing_Daisies\" target=\"_blank\">Pushing Daisies<\/a> after reading the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.teevee.org\" target=\"_blank\">Vidiots<\/a>&#8216; <a href=\"http:\/\/feeds.feedburner.com\/~r\/teevee\/mainfeed\/~3\/179735729\/sweeter-than-a-strychnine-loll.html\" target=\"_blank\">review<\/a> &#8211; particularly since its premiere inspired one of them to <a href=\"http:\/\/feeds.feedburner.com\/~r\/teevee\/mainfeed\/~3\/164798477\/premiering-tonight-pushing-dai-1.html\" target=\"_blank\">poetry<\/a>.)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Those TV nuggets were, of course, hiding on the VCR.
